Aside from handling production of corporate films, Essay PPL deals in designing assignments and organising events. It is an extension of its play producing company Essay Communications, Mumbai.
Gulzar Saab has been a mentor, guide and philosopher in Essay Communications’ journey. He has been generous with access to his vast repertoire of poems and stories, which have provided Essay PPL with the content for their various productions. Kharaashein, a collage of Gulzar saab’s writing on communal riots has acquired the status of a cult play on a subject that has been neglected otherwise. All Essay PPL’s plays were staged with great success in India and abroad, and are still running with regular shows.
One of the most exciting and popular directors on Hindi theatre scene in India, Salim Arif is an illustrious alumnus of National School of Drama, New Delhi. Currently, he is the Head of Department of Cultural Studies at Whistling Woods International, Mumbai, Asia’s leading film school. He is also associated with Navi Mumbai International Film Festival as Director, Cultural Affairs. He made his mark as Director-Choreographer of important national events with Drums of India and Wind Instruments of India shows for the Republic Day Parade in 1985 and 1986. Shyam Benegal’s Bharat Ek Khoj, Gulzar’s Mirza Ghalib, Dr.Chandraprakash Dwedi’s Chanakya got him International recognition as a Period Film Designer of substance.
Innovative in approach, Salim Arif has directed many notable actors and singers in plays like Aapki Soniya, Ghalibnaama, Kharaashein, Kaifi Saab, Atthanniyaan, etc. These plays have made him one of the most exciting and popular director in the Hindi theatre scene in India. His critically acclaimed play Aap Ki Sonia has been performed extensively in India and abroad. His path breaking Kharaashein and Ghalibnaama were showcased by Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, New York at Lincoln Center, NY in 2004. He was awarded a NSD fellowship to work on the subject of interaction between traditional and contemporary Indian theatre, with reference to the works of Habib Tanvir, B.V.Karanth, Ratan Thiyam and K.N.Panikker. He was also awarded the prestigious Vishwa Hindi Akademy’s Hindi Sewa Samman and Urdu Adab Award of U.P.Hindi-Urdu Award Committee for his contribution in theatre.
Gulzar is one of India's most respected scriptwriters and film directors and has been one of the most popular lyricists in mainstream Hindi cinema for over five decades.
Using words as mindscapes in poems and songs, with a tactile sensitivity to phonetics being his unique feature, Gulzar Saab has the rare ability to redefine the connotation of commonly used expressions and stretch their meanings to new horizons. Be it his short stories , film scripts or films, Gulzar Saab’s contribution in all these genres in the last fifty years has been prolific and consistent. A compulsive poet, the incisive pen-power of this icon of our times comes forth in his stories and poems, which are woven together in stage plays like Kharaashein ,Lakeerein , Atthanniyaan, Arre O Henry ,Googli Jhanak Jhayein and Paansa.
Apart from many Filmfare and National Awards for his films and lyrics, and an Oscar and Grammy for the song Jai ho, Gulzar has received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2004.
Ghalibnaama in 2002 set the trend of stage shows based on literary personalities and their works on stage in Mumbai, initiating a movement which has been followed with shows on several master poets on stage by others. Other notable plays from Essay PPL include Kharaashein, Aapki Sonya, Lakeerein, Hum Suffe, Atthanniyaan, Arre O Henry, Sunte Ho, Mulla Nasruddin, Paansa, Googli Jhanak Jhayein and Tajmahal Ka Udghatan.
